Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a popular and permanent method of replacing missing teeth. They’re the only tooth restoration option that replaces both the root and tooth, making dental implants the next best thing to healthy, natural teeth.

Dr. Jenkins or a member of the expert team at A Woman’s Touch Dentistry surgically inserts a titanium implant into your jaw bone. After that heals, they attach a custom-made crown to the implant. This not only restores your natural-looking smile, but the strong titanium implants also offer superior strength and durability.

Why would I get dental implants?

Missing teeth can create a host of troublesome issues, from shifting teeth to deteriorating jaw bone tissue. In addition to preventing these problems, dental implants offer numerous benefits, such as:

  • Restoring a confident smile
  • Improving chewing and speech
  • Resolving bite problems
  • Enhancing facial tissues

Dental implants replace one or more missing teeth without affecting neighboring teeth. Dental implants can also support a bridge or partial denture in cases when several teeth in a row are missing and there are no healthy teeth to anchor to.

What should I expect from getting dental implants?

The process of getting dental implants requires multiple visits over several months. First, Dr. Jenkins or a member of her team performs a thorough dental exam to make sure you’re a good candidate for dental implants.

Then, they take digital X-rays and impressions of your teeth to measure available spacing for an implant. They numb the area, then surgically place the implant into your jaw bone. It can take up to six months for your jaw to heal and the implant to fuse with the bone.

Depending on the type of implant you get, you may require a second surgery to insert a post into the anchor in your jaw. Some implants have the post attached already and only require one surgery.

After you’re completely healed, Dr. Jenkins or a member of her team attaches a customized dental crown to the post. The crown is designed to blend right in with your natural teeth, so no one will know it’s artificial.
